Restoring Neck Health: The Power of Counter-Rotation

We’re talking about building capacity in the neck. In everyday life, our bodies constantly adapt to what’s happening around us. When someone is in pain, they often move less—getting smaller, moving like a block, and minimizing motion. While that’s a natural and protective response at first, it doesn’t help us return to a healthy, resilient neck.

To restore function, we need to reintroduce counter-rotations between the neck, shoulders, and torso. Unfortunately, many traditional exercises are too contained—they don’t prepare people for real-life movement. Small counter-rotations are essential for daily activities like walking and reaching, while larger ones are needed for sports and dynamic tasks.

Practicing variations of Spine Twist Sitting on the Reformer is a great way to safely reintroduce this kind of movement, helping clients regain fluid, coordinated motion through the neck and upper body.
