Walking into a Pilates studio for the first time can feel a lot like the first day at a new school — or a new job. Everyone else seems to know where they’re going, what the unspoken rules are, and how things work around here. You’re just trying to find your locker.
The Reformer looks like a contraption built by an engineer with a sense of humor—springs, straps, a sliding carriage—and the people around you seem to know exactly what to do with it.
That’s exactly the reason our Quickstart Series was created — to help people new to Pilates get started without the worry.
What is the PNWP Quickstart Series? It’s a 4-week, small-group program that teaches beginners the foundations of Reformer Pilates in Portland, Oregon—more than 30 exercises, proper setup, and real confidence—before joining regular classes.
Over four weeks, with two classes a week, you’ll learn the core principles of Pilates and build a real foundation—not just a checklist of moves, but an understanding of how your body is supposed to move. By the end, you’ll be ready to walk into one of our beginner or beginner/intermediate drop-in classes and actually know what’s going on.
Here’s what one recent graduate told us:
“The instructors were so knowledgeable, took the class at a great pace, and were very hands-on with corrections and modifications, which was exactly what I needed. I noticed a big increase in my core strength, and it was great to be physically active again after a long period of decreased activity. I walked away feeling confident… I feel like I am on the right path.”
— A. Caufield
That last line is really the point of the whole series: on the right path. Not perfect. Not advanced. Just oriented, and moving forward with some momentum.
Why Beginners Need More Than a Drop-In Class
Why shouldn’t I just join a regular Reformer class? Regular classes move at a pace built for people who already know the equipment, the cueing, and the basic exercise vocabulary—Quickstart teaches you that first.
Here’s something we hear constantly from new clients, and it’s almost always some version of the same worry: I don’t want to slow everyone else down. It’s a real concern, and honestly, a thoughtful one—it means you’re paying attention to the people around you. But it also keeps a lot of capable people sitting on the sidelines longer than they need to.
A typical drop-in class assumes a working vocabulary: you know what “neutral spine” means, you know how to set your own springs, you know the difference between footwork and frogs. Quickstart hands you that vocabulary directly, in a setting built specifically for people who don’t have it yet.
It’s also worth saying plainly: this isn’t really about whether you’re “fit enough.” It’s about whether you’ve had a chance to learn the system. Those are two very different things, and the second one is entirely solvable in four weeks.
What You’ll Actually Learn
What do you cover in four weeks? You’ll learn the five STOTT PILATES® principles, more than 30 reformer exercises, equipment setup, and the cueing needed to modify exercises safely for your own body.
Across eight sessions, here’s what’s on the table:
- The five basic principles of STOTT PILATES®
- Over 30 foundational Reformer exercises, including modifications
- Full-body movement training for strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination
- How to improve movement patterns that protect your joints and connective tissue over time
- How to adjust the Reformer correctly for your own body
- How to use small props to make exercises more or less intense
- Cueing and modification strategies so you get the most out of every class you take after this one
Each session is led by a certified STOTT PILATES® instructor who’s used to working with brand-new bodies—not just experienced ones. The pace is intentionally unhurried, and the corrections are hands-on. Nobody is left guessing whether they’re doing it “right.”
Who This Series Is For (and Who It Isn’t)
Is the Quickstart Series right for everyone? It’s designed for generally healthy individuals without current injuries; clients managing pain or recovering from injury are better served by a private session first.
This part matters, so we’ll say it directly: Quickstart is built for people without current injuries or active therapeutic needs. It’s a strength-and-skill-building series, not a rehabilitation program.
If you’re dealing with pain, recovering from surgery, or managing a more complicated physical history, a group setting—even a beginner-friendly one—usually isn’t the most effective starting point. In that case, we’d recommend starting with one of our private 1:1 paths instead:
- Fundamental Pilates — for healthy bodies wanting individualized foundational work
- Specialized Pilates — for specific conditions or performance goals
- Therapeutic Pilates — for injury recovery or persistent pain
- Complex Condition Consultations — for long-standing or complicated issues

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any Pilates experience before starting?
No. The series is designed specifically for people with little to no Reformer experience.
What happens after I finish the series?
You’ll be ready to join our beginner and beginner/intermediate drop-in Reformer classes with a solid working knowledge of the equipment and exercises.
What if I have an injury or chronic pain?
The Quickstart Series isn’t designed for injury recovery. We’d recommend starting with a private Therapeutic Pilates session or a Complex Condition Consultation instead.
How many people are in each session?
Each series is capped at 6 participants, so instructors can give real, individual attention even in a group format.
