Melanie puts the FUN in Functional Anatomy!

I get to teach Fundamental Anatomy again! I love applied anatomy, biomechanics, arthrokinematics, brain science, fascial science and everything that helps clients move better. Join me if you want to learn the foundations of healthy and dysfunctional movement patterns. We will move, sing and groove throughout the course—I believe learning anatomy can be fun, and I hope it will excite and inspire you! Pilates, yoga, and all other budding movement professionals are welcome.” —Melanie Byford-Young

In 2020,  Melanie-Byford Young, Master Instructor Trainer of Rehabilitation, STOTT PILATES®, BHSc. PT, and co-owner of Pacific Northwest Pilates in Portland, Oregon created a new, online version of Functional Anatomy for Movement Professionals. Melanie has a knack for making basic anatomy fascinating and engaging! Her approach brings clarity to the complexity of human movement. She transforms theories into relevant and practical information that can be used to help clients and patients in a Pilates studio or clinical setting. Whether you’re learning about the Quadratus Lumborum or the Quadratus Femoris, Melanie makes anatomy meaningful for those who teach movement.

This course prepares students to have a practical understanding of movement, anatomy and physiology required  for any Pilates, Yoga or Personal Fitness teaching program. Additionally, it can serve as a refresher course. This course is recommended for students interested in progressing to the STOTT PILATES Intensive Mat and/or Reformer Course.

Online Learning Makes it Easy:

The online classroom-style presentation utilizes visual aids and hands-on techniques providing students with a thorough review of anatomy basics as well as its application to functional activities and movement.

This course uses lectures, demonstrations and group activities to teach basic anatomy fundamentals. There is a focus on anatomical terminology, which includes anatomical position, planes of motion, types of movement, names and locations of the majority of the bones in the body, locations and actions of joints, major muscle groups and the individual muscles’ origin insertion and action. Participants will deepen their understanding of the body and enhance their teaching with improved exercise selection and programming.

What You Will Learn:

Anatomical Position and its importance

The bones that makes up the axial and appendicular skeleton

Names and locations of the bony prominences and landmarks

Terms of direction and relationship & their relationship to movement

Types of joints and the movements available at the joints

Types of muscular contractions including the application of force

Origin, insertion and action of muscles

Application of functional anatomy to chosen exercises and movement
